After being told by doctors that she had just two weeks left to live, a 46-year-old Cape Town woman has chosen a deeply personal and unconventional way to confront her mortality. Diagnosed earlier this year with advanced-stage cancer, she recently learned that the disease had spread aggressively, leaving no further treatment options. Instead of surrendering to despair, she decided to take control of her final days — including the creation of her own grave.
Working closely with a local stonemason, she designed a tomb that reflects her spirit and story. The headstone carries words she penned herself, along with a carved rose symbolising love and resilience. Friends describe the design as a mirror of her character: artistic, warm, and unafraid to face life’s hardest truths.
“I want my resting place to tell my story,” she confided to her sister. “I don’t want people to stand over a stone and only see a name and dates. I want them to feel who I was.”
Beyond the grave design, she has been using her remaining time to make lasting memories — sharing precious moments with family, writing letters for her children to open at future milestones, and planning a farewell gathering.
Her family calls her “brave beyond words,” saying her choices have helped them begin to accept the inevitable. “She is showing us that even in death, you can create something beautiful,” said one close friend.
Her story has touched thousands online, where many have praised her courage and her decision to turn her final chapter into an act of self-expression.
The message she leaves behind is simple, yet profound:
“If life gives you only two weeks, make them yours.”
