Gauteng Transport MEC Kedibone Diale-Tlabela has urged Soweto residents to allow Maponya Mall to reopen on Friday.
The mall was closed on Thursday after an e-hailing driver was shot dead and two vehicles were set alight on Wednesday night.
On Thursday night, residents held a candlelight vigil outside the mall for 27-year-old Mthokosizi Khuzwayo. A minibus driver was also killed, and two others were injured this week in what is believed to be clashes between taxi operators and e-hailing drivers.
Some residents want the mall closed for seven days, but Diale-Tlabela says lawlessness will not be allowed. She stressed that closing the mall affects people who rely on its services, including Sassa clients, and workers who earn daily wages.
