The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has announced a significant milestone in the placement of learners for the 2026 academic year. According to Gauteng Education MEC Matome Chiloane, only 5 464 learners remain unplaced as part of the ongoing #2026OnlineAdmissionsGP process for Grade 1 and Grade 8. This figure reflects sustained progress in the province’s efforts to ensure that all children have access to quality education.
MEC Chiloane highlighted that the Online Admissions system has played a pivotal role in streamlining the placement of learners, making the process more efficient and transparent. The system is designed to assist parents and guardians in securing placements for their children while managing school capacities across Gauteng’s diverse educational landscape.
As of Monday, 22 December 2025, the GDE Online Admissions system recorded a total of 5 464 Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners who are currently unplaced. Breaking this down, 1 478 learners are awaiting placement in Grade 1, while 3 986 learners are still to be placed in Grade 8. These numbers underscore the department’s ongoing commitment to reaching every learner, particularly as the province prepares for the start of the new academic year.
In addition to these unplaced learners, the 2026 Online Admissions system has also recorded 7 118 late applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8. These late applications are being actively processed in line with available school capacity, ensuring that no child is left without a placement due to delayed applications. MEC Chiloane emphasized that the department is prioritizing these applications to accommodate learners who, for various reasons, were unable to apply during the main registration period.
MEC Chiloane addressed parents and guardians directly, reminding them that the 2026 Online Admissions system remains open for late applications. This is particularly important for parents who missed the main application window or whose applications were incomplete. He stressed that the department encourages all parents to act promptly to secure a placement for their child.
“Parents and guardians are urged to apply online as soon as possible,” MEC Chiloane said. “You can register or log in to the system at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. The online admissions platform has been designed to make the application process simple and user-friendly, and it is accessible from any device with an internet connection.”
During the late application period, only schools with available space will appear in the system. This ensures that parents and guardians have realistic options based on actual school capacity. Applicants are allowed to select only one school, and once a learner is placed, that placement will be final for the 2026 academic year. MEC Chiloane emphasized that placements made during this period cannot be declined, and no objections or appeals will be permitted after a learner has been allocated to a school.
The Gauteng Department of Education has made it clear that the focus of the late application process is to maximize access to education while ensuring fairness and transparency. The system is carefully monitored to prevent over-enrollment at any school and to maintain balanced class sizes, which are essential for providing quality education.
MEC Chiloane also encouraged parents to check the accuracy and completeness of their applications. Incomplete or incorrect information can result in delays or missed placements, and ensuring that all required documents are uploaded and verified can significantly improve the likelihood of a successful application.

The department has consistently emphasized that the placement of learners is a top priority, particularly for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners, as these grades mark critical transition points in a child’s educational journey. Grade 1 is the beginning of formal schooling, laying the foundation for literacy, numeracy, and overall learning. Grade 8, on the other hand, marks the transition to high school, which is a critical stage in preparing learners for the Senior Phase and eventually for tertiary education or the world of work.
MEC Chiloane concluded by expressing confidence that Gauteng will continue to make progress in placing every learner for the 2026 academic year. “Our goal is to ensure that every child in Gauteng has access to quality education. We are committed to working with parents, guardians, and school management teams to achieve this goal,” he said.
The GDE Online Admissions system has been a game-changer in recent years, allowing parents to apply from the comfort of their homes, track the progress of applications in real-time, and receive timely notifications regarding placement outcomes. This digital approach has also helped reduce administrative bottlenecks, ensuring that learners are placed more efficiently than in previous years.
With only 5 464 learners remaining unplaced, the province is well on track to achieving near-complete placement for the 2026 academic year. However, MEC Chiloane urges parents not to delay, especially as the late application period continues to be an important opportunity for those who missed the earlier deadline.
For more information and to submit applications, parents and guardians can visit the official GDE Online Admissions portal at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za. The department encourages everyone to act quickly to secure placements and ensure a smooth start to the 2026 school year for Gauteng’s learners.
By actively engaging with the online system and ensuring accurate and complete applications, parents can help the department in its mission to provide equitable access to education for every learner in Gauteng.
