Hawks Arrest Principal and Education Official Over Sale of Teaching Posts

The Hawks have arrested a school principal and a senior education department circuit manager in Ventersdorp for allegedly selling teaching posts for R15,000 each.

Principal Lydia Masiu (53) and circuit manager Petrus Mokobe (63) appeared in the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, facing five counts of corruption. They were arrested on Monday by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation teams in Klerksdorp and Ventersdorp.

“The arrests follow an investigation into allegations of corruption in the appointment of school teachers in Ventersdorp,” said Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Tinyiko Mathebula.

According to the investigation, the pair allegedly demanded bribes from complainants in exchange for teaching posts, with payments made in instalments of R15,000.

Both Masiu and Mokobe were granted bail of R8,000 each. The matter has been postponed to September 6 for further investigation.

North West Hawks head Maj-Gen Patrick Mbotho and provincial head of prosecutions Rachel Makhari praised the work of the investigating and prosecuting teams, pledging continued collaboration in the fight against corruption in the province.
