South African actress Meme Ditshego, famous for playing Joyce Mlambo in the comedy show The Coconuts, passed away at age 60. She died in a hospital on June 25, 2025, after a short illness. Her health got worse over the weekend, and the cause of her death is not yet known.

Her talent agency, Eye Media Artists, shared the sad news on Thursday. They said, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Meme Ditshego, a beloved actress and comedy legend. Her vibrant spirit and talent touched many hearts in South Africa and around the world.”
Meme was born in May 1965 and began acting in township theater. She performed in plays like Antigone and worked with school theater programs from 1989 to 1993. She also acted in children’s theater and plays like Acropolis Cafe and The Amen Corner.
Her first TV role was in 1997 as Elsie in the Afrikaans drama Sterk Skemer on SABC2. She also played Ma Thandi in Soul Buddys on SABC1, Gladys in Jozi-H on SABC3, and Ausi Ntsoaki in Muvhango on SABC2. In 2007, she starred as Joyce Mlambo in The Coconuts on M-Net, one of her most famous roles.
Meme played Josephine in the comedy Ga Re Dumele for six years, winning a Best Actress award at the South African Film and TV Awards in 2012. She was nominated again for the same role in 2014. She also appeared as Dotty Sithole in Hauser’s on SABC3, Aunt Ethel in Geraamtes in die Kas on SABC2, Winnie in Zabalaza on Mzansi Magic, Brenda in Imposter on Mzansi Magic, and Dr. Machaka in Broken Vows on e.tv.
Other roles included shows like Erfsondes, Die Uwe Pottie Potgieter, The Mating Game, and films like Alles Wat Mal Is, Skorokoro, and Love, Sex and 30 Candles.
Meme Ditshego’s work in theater, TV, and film will be remembered by many.
