A sad mood has settled over the country following news that a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldier was injured in the line of duty while safeguarding the nation’s borders during the festive season. The incident occurred on 26 December 2025, when SANDF troops intercepted a massive group of 1,174 undocumented foreign nationals attempting to cross into South Africa through illegal border points.
According to SANDF spokesperson Captain Moses Semono, members of the 1 South African Tank Regiment were deployed as part of ongoing border safeguarding operations when they encountered the unusually large group. The interception took place in Limpopo, a province that frequently experiences high volumes of undocumented border crossings, particularly during peak holiday periods.
Captain Semono revealed that this was the first time troops had to manage such an overwhelming influx of undocumented migrants during the festive season, a period that often places immense pressure on security forces due to reduced staffing levels and heightened movement across borders.
What made the situation even more alarming, he explained, was the unexpected level of aggression displayed by some individuals within the group. While SANDF members are trained to handle tense situations with restraint, events quickly escalated when one undocumented person launched a life-threatening attack on a soldier.
During the confrontation, Rifleman T.M. Mokoena sustained a stab wound to his forearm while defending himself. Captain Semono stated that Rifleman Mokoena acted purely in self-defence after being confronted with imminent danger.
“Compounding the situation was the uncharacteristic aggressiveness of the individuals involved,” said Captain Semono. “Rifleman T.M. Mokoena sustained a stab wound to his forearm while defending himself against an undocumented person who attempted a life-threatening assault.”
Despite being injured, Rifleman Mokoena demonstrated exceptional discipline and professionalism under extreme pressure. Drawing on the high standard of training provided by the SANDF, he managed to neutralise the threat without resorting to deadly force, preventing further escalation and potential loss of life.
“This incident highlights the effectiveness of our soldiers’ training,” Captain Semono added. “Even under direct attack, our members are taught to apply the minimum force necessary while prioritising the preservation of life.”
Following the incident, Defence Intelligence Services took over the matter to ensure that all legal and security protocols were followed. Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the attack and to assess whether broader security concerns may be linked to the incident.
Rifleman Mokoena received immediate medical attention from SANDF medics stationed in the area. Captain Semono confirmed that the soldier’s injury was treated promptly and that medical teams remain on standby at all times to respond to emergencies during border operations. At this stage, his condition is reported to be stable, and he is expected to make a full recovery.
Importantly, SANDF leadership emphasised that all undocumented persons intercepted during the operation were handed over to the South African Immigration Services in good health and without injury, underscoring the force’s commitment to human rights and lawful conduct, even in highly volatile situations.
The Officer Commanding Joint Tactical Headquarters Limpopo, Colonel Dikgabane Herold Tladi, praised the soldiers involved for their restraint, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to duty. He also extended well wishes to Rifleman Mokoena, expressing hope for a speedy and full recovery.
This incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers faced daily by SANDF members tasked with protecting South Africa’s borders. Often working in harsh terrain and confronting unpredictable situations, these soldiers place their lives at risk to ensure national security.
As the country reflects on this troubling event, many South Africans have expressed concern and gratitude for the bravery shown by Rifleman Mokoena and his fellow soldiers. The incident serves as a stark reminder that border safeguarding is not merely an administrative task, but a frontline operation where lives are constantly at stake.
