JOHANNESBURG – The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) has stepped in to cover all funeral expenses for slain e-hailing driver, Mthokozisi Mvelase.
Mvelase, 27, was brutally shot and set alight in his car outside Maponya Mall in Soweto last week. SANTACO President Motlabane Tsebe confirmed that arrangements are also being made to transport Mvelase’s remains from Gauteng back to his family home in KwaZulu-Natal.
Tsebe condemned the killing, stressing that the law must deal harshly with criminals in the transport industry to prevent such tragedies from recurring. He further pledged that SANTACO will play its part in fostering peaceful co-existence between the taxi and e-hailing sectors.
The taxi association added that it will work closely with authorities to ensure that taxi drivers and owners involved in violence or criminal activity are held fully accountable.
