Zulu King Wants R10 Donation from Every Zulu Person Worldwide for the Annual Reed Dance Festival.

In a bid to secure the Zulu king and the royal family’s independence, King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s advisors have suggested a monthly R10 donation from every Zulu person worldwide. This proposal arose after the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury withheld funds for the annual Reed Dance festival, which the king moved from its long-standing venue at Enyokeni royal palace to Mashobeni palace.

The king’s advisors, Professor Jabulani Maphalala and Philani Mavundla, stated that the negative press and financial constraints imposed by the government are an attempt to undermine the king, arguing that since the Zulu people pay taxes, they deserve to have their cultural and traditional obligations respected. They insisted that the Zulu nation should support the king’s decisions without government interference, as he is the ultimate authority. Maphalala noted that this concept of financial independence is not new and was first proposed in 1933 by Prince Mshiyeni after the death of King Solomon kaDinuzulu to provide for the royal family.
